Please come to our October meeting of The Gluten Intolerance Group of the Outer Banks

Happy Fall!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer.  We did not plan a September Meeting of the Gluten Intolerance Group of the Outer Banks as I encouraged everyone to attend the Multi-Specialty Symposium on Gluten Intolerance in Richmond.  For those that did not get to attend, at the October meeting, I will give a brief report on the informative presentations by many specialists in the field of gluten intolerance.

October's meeting will take place at my house and it should be a good time to talk to old friends, make new ones and have a great time.  Please bring a gluten-free dish for all to share and include the ingredients on a piece of paper.  People that have more than one food intolerance especially need this information.  I have lots of room and will have the hot tub available for those that would like to take a dip.   Our meetings are open to all that have gluten intolerance and for those that would like to learn more about living gluten-free.

Date: Sunday October 23rd
Time: 2:30-6:30 PM
Place: 1240 Atlantic Avenue, Corolla NC 27927
RSVP if you can come to Clara Schneider at 252-453-9221

I can't wait to see you!

Angel Food Ministries

It has been brought to my attention by my good friend Kate that Angel Food Ministries has a host site right here on the Outer Banks! Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit food cooperative. They provide  high quality food boxes that will allow you to make the most of your dollar.

The best thing that is offered is an allergen-free (no gluten, peanuts, soy, milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, peanuts or tree-nuts) box. May's box ($25.00), provides 1 pound of chicken breast nuggets, 1 pound of breaded chicken tenderloin, 1 pound of breaded breast fillet patties, 1 pound breaded boneless chicken wings and 1 pound breaded cubed steak. Remember this is all GLUTEN-FREE!!! If you have gluten-free children they will be ecstatic to enjoy foods that are usually forbidden.

Other boxes offered include a fresh fruit and vegetable box (approximately  1/2 bushel) for $24.00 or a box of 8 NY strip steaks (each 10 oz) for $26.00. There are other boxes for you to consider as well. Beware that not all the boxes are gluten-free.

For more information go to www.angelfoodministries.com or call 252-441-5897.  The address for pick-up is Outer Banks Presbyterian Church at 907 S. Croatan Hwy/MP8.5 Kill Devil Hills, NC 27928.  Pick-up time is usually 1 Saturday a month between 8:30-9:30am.  For those of you that are out of our wonderful outer banks area, please call 1-888-819-3745 as there are pick-up locations throughout the South.

Please enjoy this great community service!

OBX Gluten-Free Support!

I always try do my best and research the subject thoroughly before starting anything!  Gluten intolerance and Celiac disease are  afflictions that affect many people.  I was diagnosed a few years ago with Celiac disease.  The therapy for this and gluten intolerance is to eat gluten-free.  After a period of feeling sorry for myself, filled with regrets for all the foods I could no longer consume, I decided to start fighting back.  It became clear to me the level of knowledge concerning the subject among the general population, and more particularly food stores and restaurants was quite sorrowful.  What further struck me was that it is not nearly as difficult to reasonably accommodate people such as myself as most would think.
I thought, what do I want?    For me and others like me, I wanted great gluten-free food served in restaurants and a place to go for support.

What did I do?   I started a gluten-free support group on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I prepared an information session on Celiac disease and  gluten-intolerance, posted advertisements and invited everyone I could think of to come to my first meeting.  I was told to expect 5-6 people and was overwhelmed to find 16 people came!   I presented my slides and then the group voted on which national Celiac or gluten-free group to join.  Because of what it offered, flexibility and cost, the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America (GIG) was unanimously selected.  We have now started the official process of joining!

We decided we will  meet at a local restaurant for our next meeting.  Chef Mike of the "Weeping Radish Restaurant", will accommodate our GF needs. He is going to work hard on recipes and I have agreed to double check ingredients and procedures.  Our next function will be Thursday, May 12th, 2011 at 6:00 PM. Please call Chef Mike if you can join us.  I just can't wait! I have purchased items such as pastrami and "Bone Suckin' Mustard" and "Teriyaki Style Sauce" to take home from the Weeping Radish Butchery in the past.  They are, of course, all gluten-free and delicious!

Please come join us at the restaurant on the 12th, meet some of our group members and enjoy a worry free, scrumptious dinner. All are welcome to come and Mike's menu is reasonable in price. I would love to meet you!   (Weeping Radish Eco Farm & Brewery 6810 Caratoke Hwy Grandy, NC 27939 (252) 491-5205

Happy Gluten Free Eating!
