OBX Gluten-Free Support!

I always try do my best and research the subject thoroughly before starting anything!  Gluten intolerance and Celiac disease are  afflictions that affect many people.  I was diagnosed a few years ago with Celiac disease.  The therapy for this and gluten intolerance is to eat gluten-free.  After a period of feeling sorry for myself, filled with regrets for all the foods I could no longer consume, I decided to start fighting back.  It became clear to me the level of knowledge concerning the subject among the general population, and more particularly food stores and restaurants was quite sorrowful.  What further struck me was that it is not nearly as difficult to reasonably accommodate people such as myself as most would think.
I thought, what do I want?    For me and others like me, I wanted great gluten-free food served in restaurants and a place to go for support.

What did I do?   I started a gluten-free support group on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I prepared an information session on Celiac disease and  gluten-intolerance, posted advertisements and invited everyone I could think of to come to my first meeting.  I was told to expect 5-6 people and was overwhelmed to find 16 people came!   I presented my slides and then the group voted on which national Celiac or gluten-free group to join.  Because of what it offered, flexibility and cost, the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America (GIG) was unanimously selected.  We have now started the official process of joining!

We decided we will  meet at a local restaurant for our next meeting.  Chef Mike of the "Weeping Radish Restaurant", will accommodate our GF needs. He is going to work hard on recipes and I have agreed to double check ingredients and procedures.  Our next function will be Thursday, May 12th, 2011 at 6:00 PM. Please call Chef Mike if you can join us.  I just can't wait! I have purchased items such as pastrami and "Bone Suckin' Mustard" and "Teriyaki Style Sauce" to take home from the Weeping Radish Butchery in the past.  They are, of course, all gluten-free and delicious!

Please come join us at the restaurant on the 12th, meet some of our group members and enjoy a worry free, scrumptious dinner. All are welcome to come and Mike's menu is reasonable in price. I would love to meet you!   (Weeping Radish Eco Farm & Brewery 6810 Caratoke Hwy Grandy, NC 27939 (252) 491-5205
